Change is constant — that doesn’t make it easy

Some transitions are losses we grieve: the death of someone we love, the end of a marriage, declining health, a future that won’t happen the way we planned. Others are technically “good” — a promotion, a move, retirement, a child leaving for college — yet still leave us anxious, unmoored, or strangely sad. Both are real, and both deserve support.

Life transition counseling at Mana Life is anchored by Cory Jones, LCSW, whose practice centers on grief, loss, caregiver support, and life transitions. Cory is a long-time Licensed Medical Social Worker with a local hospice program, where she continues to support patients and families through end of life — experience that brings rare depth and steadiness to this work.

Transitions we commonly support

  • Grief and bereavement — recent or long-carried
  • Caregiving for an aging parent, ill spouse, or family member
  • Anticipatory grief and end-of-life family support
  • Divorce, separation, and major relationship endings
  • Retirement, career change, and job loss
  • Empty nest, new parenthood, and family role changes
  • Health diagnoses and adjusting to new limitations
  • College transitions — leaving home, graduating, what’s next

How counseling helps during transition

There’s no “right way” to grieve and no schedule for adjusting to change — anyone who tells you otherwise hasn’t sat with much loss. What counseling offers is a steady place to process what happened, honor what was lost, and rebuild a sense of identity and direction on the other side.

Depending on your needs, your counselor may blend supportive grief work with cognitive behavioral tools for the anxiety and low mood that often ride along with upheaval, and mindfulness practices for the moments when everything feels like too much. Caregivers especially benefit from having one hour that is entirely theirs.

Sessions are available in person in State College or by telehealth anywhere in Pennsylvania and New Jersey — a meaningful option for caregivers who can’t easily leave home.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if what I’m feeling is normal grief or depression?

Grief and depression can look alike, and grief can develop into depression. A licensed counselor can help you tell the difference — and either way, you don’t have to wait until it’s ‘bad enough’ to deserve support.

It’s been years since my loss. Is it too late for grief counseling?

Not at all. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and unprocessed loss often resurfaces during new transitions. Counseling helps whenever you’re ready.

I’m a caregiver and can’t leave home easily. Can you still help?

Yes — our secure telehealth sessions were practically made for caregivers. You can meet with your counselor from home, anywhere in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

What does life transitions counseling cost?

The initial evaluation is $175; ongoing sessions are $145 (55 min), $125 (45 min), or $100 (30 min) — identical rates in person or online.
